This evergreen clematis has been difficult to identify. We received it originally from our friends the Sugimotos in Japan. They had gotten it in China where it was listed as Clematis anshuensis. That nomenclature is equivalent to Clematis clarkeana. After many years, we have concluded that this plant is not C. clarkena. It does not match the botanical description. Instead it is much closer to C. urophylla because of several characteristics. One, the flowers are not "glabrous" (smooth) on the outside as those of C. clarkeana are described. Nor are they flushed with purple. Instead they are white to greenish white. In addition, the length of the stamens is one-half the length of the sepals which is characteristic of C. urophylla. Also, this vine blooms from December to early February, much later than C. clarkeana. No matter, what the botanical name, this is a fine plant for a sheltered garden. We grow it in part shade in a rhododendron. Its dark green, deeply veined leaves are three-part: the central leaflet is the largest. All leaflets come to a pointed tip that often twists. The flower buds are pale green and very rounded. In our specimen, the flowers seem to occur in pairs. We've grown this for more than 10 years and have struggled with nomenclature, but have decided it is garden-worthy and needs to be enjoyed by clematis lovers.  December, January, and February. bloom   12 ft.

Climbing through a medley of shrubs in a partly shaded corner of our garden, Clematis 'Albina Plena' always surprises us when her clean white bell-shaped flowers begin to open. The four primary sepals taper in spidery fashion and enfold a cluster of narrower white sepals within. In width flowers measure more than 3 inches, large enough to be clearly seen from a distance. The short filaments are not readily visible, but a charming red blotch at the base of the sepals (at the top of the flower) adds a dash of color. This is one of many lovely clematis hybridized by Magnus Johnson, the Swedish author of an astounding monograph on clematis. Clematis alpina 'Stolwiyk Gold' is unusual in the world of Clematis because of its yellow gold leaves, a trait it shares with very few other Clematis. This was developed and introduced by the Dutch firm C. G. Stolwijk & Co. in 2006 and, during the time that it has been in the trade, it has slowly developed a following. One reason for this is the fact that, it blooms early, even in somewhat limited light, and blooming will often repeat several times throughout the summer. A second reason is that the yellow green to gold yellow color of the foliage does not turn green as it matures but persists throughout the growing season. The foliage alone lights up a part shade area. The flowers are lovely - bell-shaped with 4 to 8 violet sepals dangling from red stems. We grow this clematis up the stump of a dead tree on nylon netting. What we have come to appreciate about this extra-hardy plant is the fact that it is always in bloom during the growing season. Clematis 'Elegant Rhythm' is a Joy Creek Introduction for 2016. We have long been interested in the attributes of Clematis integrifolia - its winter hardiness, free-flowering nature and its non-climbing habit especially make it valuable to gardeners. 'Elegant Rhythm' is the third of five seedlings we selected from a batch of seeds from our finest integrifolia stock plant. Originally, we were looking for self-supporting plants but, because we water from overhead, the stems tended to flatten. We have opted to use a simple stake and one piece of garden twine to keep 'Elegant Rhythm' upright throughout the season. The beak-like buds start out with their tips pointing upward. Then, as the flowers begin to open, they curve downward in a shepherd's crook fashion. The pagoda-roofed flowers are rich purple blue. The undersides of the leaves are coppery bronze as they emerge. Dark stems are yet another element that enhances this introduction. Cut back by half in midsummer after the first flowering to get an autumn bloom or continue to dead-head on a regular basis and get continuous summer bloom. Masako Takeuchi was a gifted hybridizer of clematis. Over the years we have been able to add some of her plants to our collection. The striking star-like flowers of Clematis 'Haru Ichiban' (1992) show some of the characteristics of the plants she selected. It is a cross between C. 'Barbara' Jackman' and C. 'Mrs. N. Thompson' and, although it has the vigor of both of those plants, it does not have the same coloration. The texture of the flowers is somewhat mottled in appearance as if they were made of a more porous fabric. The veining and the paler central bar is accentuated by the downward slope of the sepals making the flowers look as if they were about to take flight. The white filaments are a fine contrast with their red anther tips. Individual flowers are 3 to 4 inches in width. These shrubby clematis are among the easiest to grow. They are content to bloom all summer in the sun with only occasional water and feed. Their dark green, rugged, three-part leaves are large with individual leaflets measuring 6 1/2 inches long. Tall flower stems reach 45 inches in height with flowers borne in clusters at two or three widely separated axils. The whorled clusters are composed of loose stems bearing 3 to 5 buds each. The buds open sequentially extending the bloom season for a very long time. Individual flowers are 1 3/4 inches wide with recurved tips. Rich violet blue on opening, they slowly fade to gentian blue. Blooming on both the old and new wood, Clematis 'Ilka' is a welcome addition to the list of clematis that have long-bloom periods. Flowers measure between 5 and 6 inches across. We have grown Clematis 'Iubileinyi-70' in our gardens for almost twenty years and have always admired its vigorous and free-flowering nature. Bred by A.N. Velosenko-Valeris of the Nikitsky State Botanic Garden in Ukraine, 'Iubileinyi-70' is one many plants from behind the Iron Curtain that now grace gardens throughout the world. The flowers mostly have six sepals (although sometimes they have four or five). They have wavy edges, a ribbed central bar and come to a pointed tip. The filaments and anthers are tawny and complement the flower color. This was released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lenin in 1870. The name is often written in English as 'Jubilee 70'. (There is some question as to the parentage of this cross. The International Clematis Society gives C. 'Blue Gem' and C. 'Jackmanii' as the parents, but other sources indicate that this is a cross between C. 'Jackmanii' and C. 'Gipsy Queen'.)  Mid-to-late summer. bloom   10-12 ft.

Thanks to the Rogerson Clematis Collection for giving us our specimen of this hard-to-find climber. Clematis japonica 'Gokanosho' was found in Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, Japan, by Tetsushi Shiraishi in a district called Goka no sho. It is notable for the modest variegation that it has on its foliage. Our plant has leaves that are splashed or lightly mottled in creamy white, although sometimes leaves are all green. Sometimes there is a blush of pink in the variegation. The variegation is most noticeable when the vine is in bloom. The bell-shaped flowers have four very fleshy sepals that recurve at their tips. The purple red is deepest at the sepal tips and grows gradually paler, almost white, at the top of the inch-long bell. Inside the sepals are pale with greenish white filaments.  May to June. bloom   6-12 ft.

Allister Keay, the wonderful New Zealand clematis grower and breeder, brought a gift plant of Clematis 'Jenny Keay' to us when he visited our nursery back in the 1990's. We have grown it in a container as a treasure for many years. This Clematis montana form (thought to be the result of a cross between C. montana and C. spooneri) has a unique appearance. Its flowers are both double and semi-double. Additionally, it is not as vigorous as many montana forms, is slower growing and has tighter internodes. These are assets that have allowed us to grow it in a series of containers for the last many years. The flowers of 'Jenny Keay' are very lovely. When grown in the sun, they have a pink blush in the outer sepals. In the shade the flowers are more greenish white. The filaments are a complementary pale green with yellowish green anthers. Allister Keay (pronounced like the alphabet letter "k") is one of the most accomplished clematarians we have met. Our friends the Chikumas have created many delightful small-flowered clematis hybrids using a variety of our North American species. They develop the majority of their plants to be grown in containers. Clematis 'Little Bell Sumire' (2010) is no exception. Compact in height, with linear foliage and inch-long flowers, it is ideal for containers but has also done well in the open garden. Give it a place where it can be seen up close. The somewhat outward facing tubular flowers are a soft violet on the exterior and are a rich violet inside. Because the tips of the sepals recurve, the dark violet is clearly revealed as the flowers mature. The name 'Little Bell Sumire' is a hybrid as well, using English and Japanese. More than 25 years ago, we received a plant of Clematis macropetala from a local grower. We have grown this plant in different sized containers and in varying settings in the garden throughout the last few decades, but we have never propagated it until now. This selection of Clematis macropetala has such nice-sized flowers of good blue we have decided it deserves to be in the trade. The broader outer sepals of the ballet-skirt flowers are violet blue. They hold a ruff of narrower blue sepals within. Please note that over the years, as our weather has changed, we have noticed that this plant does best in the Pacific Northwest with morning sun and protection from the hottest afternoon sun. The history of Clematis 'Mrs. Robert Brydon' reminds us that many of the plants that we grow in our gardens have been "found" by gardeners. In this case, in 1935, the gardener for Elizabeth Prentiss of Cleveland, Ohio, found this cross between C .heracleifolia var. davidiana, a species from China, and our North American native, C. virginiana. It was named for the gardener's wife. This big herbaceous clematis has managed to remain in the trade ever since. One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that it blooms for an extended period of time. Individual flowers are small but are borne in great profusion near the terminals of the stem. Each flower has four or five sepals that are curled back to expose prominent stamens. Because it does not climb, we have found it useful in large containers where we let it spill dramatically to the ground. We have also used it to cover gentle inclines and to hide stumps. We found Clematis ochroleuca growing in roadside ditches in western Virginia. This clumping herbaceous perennial produces multiple stems, each bearing a single terminal flower. Originally collected in Korea by a member of the Japanese Clematis Society. Clematis patens 'Manshuuki' means "Manchurian Yellow" (Was WADA'S PRIMROSE). This was later introduced to Europe by Kiyoshi Wada and given the name 'Wada's Primrose'. We have grown it for many years with other cream colored clematis to determine if it is the most yellow. It is not. The 6-7 inch flowers open a greenish cream color in our cool springs but soon age to cream. The flower has an elegant shape with tapering sepals. Barry Fretwell has given the clematis world many exceptional plants, among them Clematis PATRICIA ANN FRETWELL which was released in 1995 and named for his wife. When we first learned of this plant we were told that it had large double, red flowers, something unknown at the time. What we found once we bloomed the plant was that the flowers are pink with rosy-red stains on the bases of their sepals. Any disappointment vanished once we saw the dramatic, reliably double flowers of late spring. Later flowers are single, pale pink with a rose-colored bar in the center of each sepal. This is a break-through clematis in color and shape. The tulip- or lily-flowered clematis that derive their shape from the species Clematis texensis have been available for almost a century. Unfortunately many of the early selections of C. texensis crossed with large-flowered hybrids have been lost. We still have a few such as 'Duchess of Albany,' 'Gravetye Beauty' and the like. But, we have not had one with a white center. Developed by Wim Snoeijer at J. van Zoest Nursery in Holland in 2006, this was released in 2012. The 2.5-inch-long flowers show the distinctive tulip shape. They have purple pink buds that open to reveal their white interior. This unusual fully double red clematis is the work of Japanese hybridizer Takashi Watanabe (1995). Clematis 'Red Star' blooms on old wood in late spring and early summer. The 4-to-6-inch blooms are dense with raspberry red sepals. We have found that sometimes the large lower sepals can appear almost leaf-like with patches of red and green. This is a trait it shares with many of the double patens-type clematis. Kazushige Ozawa made the cross between C. integrifolia and C. reticulata that resulted in the hybrid 'Roguchi' which is now a world-wide favorite. At the same time, he selected two other seedlings which remained unnamed. Since Mr. Ozawa's death, his nephew Mikiyoshi Chikuma has maintained those two crosses. Recently, Mr. Chikuma released the second cross. Its flowers are almost identical to the original 'Roguchi' - deep plummy bell-flowers of good texture and size that bloom throughout the summer. The foliage, however, is a little different, more like C. intergrifolia and less like C. reticulata. As a result, this plant is more upright, with stiffer stems. Most importantly, it is less susceptible to powdery mildew than the original 'Roguchi'. We have grown 'Roguchi No. 2' for three years and think it is a fine plant. It is not as lush in appearance as the first, but may be an improvement for gardeners in areas of high humidity. This lovely recent addition to the realm of herbaceous clematis is a cross between Clematis x diversifolia 'Olgae' and C. 'The President' both of which are venerable cultivars. It was hybridized in France by Laurence Arene-Querand. The diversifolia parent gives the plant its general habit, longevity of bloom and flower shape. The mid-sized dark blue flowers consist of 5 or 6 (sometimes 4) sepals that twist slightly and come to a pointed tip. Of particular note are the dark anther tips that are very pronounced in the young flowers. As the flowers age and widen the white filament bases become more visible and become an attractive contrast to the dark sepals. The sepals are well-ribbed on their reverse sides. In the 1980's Sakata Seed Company of Japan produced a series of clematis that were named for Japanese mountains. Mt.Tsubakuro in Nagano Prefecture is celebrated in this particular clematis. Our friend Kazushige Ozawa gave us Clematis 'Tsuzuki' (Ozawa, 1982) when we first met him. We grew it in our garden for many years but it succumbed to a vole invasion. We are happy to have it back in production. Clematis 'Tsuzuki' bears beautiful mid-sized, rounded, white flowers with light yellow anthers that really complement the overall effect. Mr. Ozawa was excited about using 'Tsuzuki' in the cut flower trade but soon changed his focus to bell shaped clematis. This can be grown in containers or in the garden. NW China, N Korea. This is often listed as Clematis heracleifolia var. davidiana which is the name by which we first knew it. It has now been reclassified as its own species. In habit, Clematis tubulosa is shrubby with a woody base and long upright flowering stems. Its rugged leaves are in three parts with the terminal leaf being the largest. The leaflets are toothed along their margins. Many writers compare Clematis tubulosa's flowers to those of hyacinths. This is an apt comparison because, like hyacinths, the flowers are sweetly scented. Individual flowers are bell-shaped, stalkless and erect (not nodding). They form tight whorls of between 6 and 15 flowers. One major difference between this and C. heracleifolia is that this species is dioecious and the latter is not. We use this as a background plant in a mixed perennial border.  July, August, and September. bloom   30 in. x 3 ft.

Our friends Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne at Northwest Garden Nusery have given us seedlings of the lovely C. viorna that graces their garden. The lustrous urn-shaped flowers have recurved tepals that reveal their whitish interiors. The flowers of these seedlings are slightly variable with a range of color from dark rose to red rose. The compound leaves are composed of 5-to-7 small leaflets. This is an ideal vine to grow in a mid-sized shrub because its foliage is not large and heavy. We have grown it in Osmanthus 'Goshiki' where the gold variegated foliage of the shrub displays the red flowers beautifully. The seed-heads are attractive long after the flowers have finished their bloom.  Mid- to late summer. bloom   6-8 ft.
