655-003D4     Holboellia angustifolia var. angustifolia     ( Sausage vine )
Zones 7, 8, 9, 10     Sun, Part Shade White flowers
Thanks to Portland garden designer Lauren Hall-Behrens for allowing us to make cuttings on her specimen of this wonderful evergreen climber which she bought at Heronswood Nursery. The dark green palmate leaves consist of five, occasionaly six, leaflets that are narrow and tapering at the tip as the specific name suggests. This has been slow growing in our garden but now that it has reached its 4th year it has begun to put on rapid new growth which is in all ways more delicate in appearance than Holboelia coriacea. It is amazing how the leading stem seems to lasso branches as it follows its ascent up trees and shrubs. Lauren grows hers to stunning effect on a fence. Pale spring flowers are both male and female. We have never had fruit but have seen pictures of the purple "sausages" of Holboelia angustifolia var. angustifolia and hope, given a little more time, we will begin to see them in our gardens.  Spring. bloom   20 ft. x Variable

655-001D4     Holboellia coriacea
Sun, Part Shade     Zones 7, 8, 9, 10 Greenish White flowers
Central China and Korea. Many of our customers want evergreen vines and we are always glad to point out the virtues of Holboellia coriacea to them. The vigorous climber lassos its way to the top with stems corkscrewing themselves onto trellis, branches and the like as they climb. The semi-glossy leaves are composed of three leaflets and measure up to six inches in length. There are both male and female flowers on the vine. The male flowers bloom on the previous year's growth and are less visible. The female flowers bloom on new wood in corymbs of dangling bell-shaped flowers. If your season is warm and long, you may find curious sausage-shaped fruits about 2 1/2 inches long dangling from the vine. They are said to be edible. This is a big vine. Because it is evergreen, it can hold a lot of weight in a snowstorm. Be sure that your fence, trellis, or host tree or shrub is sturdy enough to accommodate the weight.  Spring. bloom   22 ft.
