This is one of the last selections made by our friend, the hybidizer Kazushige Ozawa. It is new to our gardens, but already we can see the vigor of the vine. Mr. Ozawa's nephew reports that this reaches about 9 feet in a season and produces masses of bell-shaped flowers throughout the summer. We are unsure of the cross, but Mr. Ozawa raised this from seed he took from Clematis texensis. The leaves are mid-green and clearly tri-part. It was named for the Japanese god of fire who was revered by Mr. Ozawa's father.  Mid-May to August. bloom   9 ft.

Recently a well-known plant photographer discovered the graceful blue bells of this clematis dangling over the gold and green foliage of Salvia officianalis 'Aurea Variegata' in our Texture Garden. Photos were taken, but what the photos can never reveal is the delicate honey scent of the flowers. The ornamental seed heads, which develop as the plant continues to bloom, are like delicate, miniature sculptures. Use this clematis as a trailer among low shrubs or draping over a wall.
