 | Korea, Japan. We often hear people call this shrub evergreen, but it should probably be thought of as half-evergreen because it does drop many of its leaves in the autumn. The rounded leaves are thick with a pale green underleaf. When Viburnum carlesii compactum is grown in full sun, many of the leaves turn purple red. The very fragrant flowers form into 3-inch spherical clusters. The pink flowers emerge from dark pink buds. Green fruits mature into red and eventually turn black. This slow-growing, rounded shrub becomes wider than tall over time.
