Mexico. The flowers of Salvia curviflora are well-visited by the local hummingbirds who frequent our retail yard. No wonder. The shape of those flowers seems made for their long bills. Those flowers are 1 1/2 inches in length with the upper lip extending well over the lower lip. Because of the fine hairs on the their exteriors, the flowers look like they are made of velvet. Terminal flowering stems measure up to 10 inches in length and these are followed by flowers on lower, axillary stems. The leaves are dark green and well-veined. They take on bronze highlights as they age.
