Crepe myrtles are among the many plants that the United States National Arboretum has worked on to improve flower color, habit, and mildew- and drought- resistance. Among the most lovely of the Arboretum's selections is Lagerstroemia 'Arapaho' which was released in 2003. It is a cross between L. indica and L. fauriei crossed with L. limii resulting in a small tree that will reach 20 feet in height in about a decade. Like other crepe myrtles, the bark is attractively mottled. But for most gardeners, it is the spectacular display of red flowers that makes the greatest impression. This is followed by maroon-tinged leaves in the fall. This is a ideal small tree for a sunny smaller garden.
