We use this dark-purple foliaged tree as the back drop for one of our lavendar walks. There, its dark foliage shows off the flowers of the lavenders, spiraeas, and old world salvias. Nearby gold foliaged Spiraea 'Ogon' contrasts sharply with 'Royal Purple' and keeps this area from becoming too gloomy. We keep the Cotinus c. `Royal Purple' in scale by regularly cutting it back in the late winter. By doing so, we maintain a broad but 10- to 12-foot tree that anchors this border. The summer inflorescences are in loose terminal panicles which rise above the foliage. From a distance, the cloud of tiny flowers resemble a haze of smoke which is the origin of the common name Smoke tree.
