There is speculation that this is a cross between Colchicum variegatum and C. autumnale. In the spring, 6-inch strap-shaped leaves emerge reminding you where you have planted your bulbs. These leaves go dormant in late spring. Then, just when the summer garden is near its end and many perrenials are all but played out, lovely water-lily shaped flowers emerge leafless out of the bare ground. The flowers are checkered with purple pink checks. Colchicums help to carry on a year-round sequence of bulbs. Grow these in a sunny site with occasional summer water.

Early autumn.  3-4 in. x 3-4 in.
