Clematis 'Nagara' is an early selection made by the Japanese hybridizer Kozo Sugimoto in 1990. We have grown this reliable plant for almost 18 years. The lovely large flowers lighten along the central bar of their sepals as they age. The sepals are fairly narrow and arch so that their pointed tips turn downward in a graceful fashion. A sharp contrast is found in the white filaments that turn red where they join the reddish anthers. The flowers are an elegant fusion of shape and color. We are sure that the name refers to the Nagara River which flows not far from the Sugimoto home.

May and late summer.   6-8 ft.
