Our specimen of Calycanthus 'Hartlage Wine' is fully mature and blooms from spring until the autumn. Invariably, customers fall under the charm of its 3-inch wine red flowers shaped like star magnolias, its handsome slightly glossy rounded leaves, and the delicate fragrance lingering in the air around it. In 1991, when Seattle area landscape designer Richard Hartlage was in graduate school at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum, he crossed Calycanthus chinensis with the native allspice Calycanthus florida. This is the product of that cross which is now called Calycanthus x raulstonii. This mid-sized, deciduous shrub is easily pruned and shaped to accommodate a variety of landscapes. There are few shrubs which offer such a long-term display of exotic looking flowers as this wonderful hybrid.

Spring, summer into the autumn.  8-10 ft. x 6-8 ft.
