It is always exciting to discover a compact shrub with evergreen foliage that is suitable for a low-water garden. It is even more exciting to find one that blooms during a difficult time of year. Arctostaphylos densiflora does just that and, as the specific name indicates, it bears a lot of flowers. Although it is native to the maritime chaparral in Sonoma Co., California, it grows well for us in Portland, Oregon. The fairly small new leaves are bright green and somewhat shiny. They are held upright on dramatic branches that are red purple in color. Early pollinators love the small, closed-mouth, urn-shaped flowers.

Late winter to early spring.  3 ft. x 3 ft.
