Arctostaphylos 'Sunset' was introduced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Sunset magazine. This natural hybrid between A. hookeri and A. pajaroensis, forms a midsized, evergreen shrub that has certainly adapted itself to our mediterranean climate. The mid-green leaves are somwhat triangular in shape. In the spring, the new growth is a coppery color and that glow is still evident later as the leaves mature. Many gardeners have used this to make an attractive informal hedge. It can tolerate light pruning but is best left in its natural rounded shape. The clusters of white-with-a-blush-of-pink flowers dangle in clusters early in the season. As the shrub matures, the mahogony bark becomes more evident.
