Welcome to the shopping for plants at Joy Creek Nursery. Our plant list is designed to accommodate all the plants we grow. We add to and update this list on a regular basis throughout the season. The information regarding the plants listed here is based on our observations in our own gardens as well as the published literature currently available. Most of the plant photos appearing on the website have been taken in our nursery display gardens, stock fields or home gardens. While we do not have photos of all the plants, we add them as the combination of time, appropriate weather and general plant appearance allows.

ORDERING
Orders are filled and plant material reserved on a first received, first served basis. All orders will be confirmed via e-mail if there is to be more than a week turnaround before shipping. For those of you wishing to order by FAX, the number is (503) 543-6933. If you wish to place a phone order, call us at (503) 543-7474. We do not have a minimum order requirement; however, if you are ordering a single plant or placing a small order, the cost per plant can be quite high when handling, packaging and shipping are included.

OUR PLANTS
We grow our plants from seeds, cuttings and divisions. To ensure against soil-borne diseases, all seedlings and cuttings are raised in various soil-less mixtures. All plants are wintered out-of-doors or in unheated greenhouses to make them hardy and ready to grow in your garden.

To help reduce shipping costs, we grow most of our plants for shipping in smaller diameter, deeper containers than is normal for the nursery industry. These pots facilitate the development of stronger root systems while requiring less soil than other more standard containers. The plant size that we ship is indicated by the catalogue number. An entirely numeric number (000-001) indicates a plant grown in a 4-inch pot or an equivalent division/propagation unit. A “-1” at the end of a catalogue number (000-001-1) indicates the nursery equivalent of a 6 inch diameter container or a number one division. You will also find the following symbols designating different sized containers at the end of our plant numbers:

  Symbol   Pot Size
  Qt
D3
D4
  Nursery Quart
2-7/8” x 2-7/8” x 5-1/2”
3-5/8” x 3-5/8” x 6”

We are conservative in designating hardiness zones for our plants, but they are based in general on The American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants and our own experience.

All our plants are nursery grown. None of our plants are collected in the wild.

SHIPPING
We ship our plants to you using United Parcel Service (UPS) or the United States Postal Service (USPS).

To reduce shipping weight, many of our plants are shipped out of their pots with the root ball intact, and others, such as clematis, are shipped in their containers. All plants are packaged to insure they do not dry out or become damaged in shipping.

We will ship your complete order as close to your preferred shipping date as possible. During our peak shipping times (April through June) there may be up to a three-week turnaround in processing order. Because we do not back-order, an additional order will have to be placed for any items not ready for shipping at the requested time. Please remember that our shipping season is determined by local climatic conditions. Should conditions be unfavorable either here or at the destination we will wait to ship until a weather appropriate time. In general, our shipping season begins in February and continues through mid-November. For exceptions see #2 below.

Our fee for handling and packaging is $4.00. We will charge you the actual UPS or USPS charges at the time of shipping and you will receive a statement of those charges with your shipment.

Here are some things to know:

  1. UPS Ground Service is standard from the nursery to AZ, CO, UT, WA, OR, CA, NV, ID, WY and MT.
  2. If you live in a state not covered above and are able to receive and care for your plants while they are dormant, or if you live in a state where winter planting is the norm, we will ship plants to you via UPS-Ground service from October 15th through March 15th weather permitting. This can reduce the shipping costs dramatically. After March 15th, we will ship UPS 3rd –Day Air to guarantee that your plants reach you in good condition. Please indicate you want UPS Ground service in the Comments section of our order form. This option does not apply to Alaska and Hawaii.
  3. Remember, if you work in a commercial area and can receive your order at work, you can further lower your UPS charges. Just fill in your work address as the shipping address. Be sure to let us know this is a commercial address.

SUBSTITUTIONS
Although we start our season with a good supply of all plants listed in the catalogue, we cannot always anticipate the demand for every plant. Please let us know if we may substitute for any plant that is out of stock. We have provided a space for alternates on the order form. We substitute with plants of equal or greater value than the plant originally requested.

OUR PROMISE
We promise you that we ship only strong, vigorous, correctly named plants from our nursery. If you should have a problem with any of our plants or receive them in damaged condition, please contact us within five (5) days of their arrival so we can address the problem.
