China, Korea, Japan. With its vase-like shape and small stature, Magnolia sieboldii is ideally suited to a smaller garden. Here are some additional reasons to choose this tree. The white flowers are nodding and not upright as on many magnolias. This makes it easy to look inside them and see their contrasting red stamens and to smell their sweet fragrance. The flowers open throughout much of the summer and are readily visible against the rounded dark green leaves. The felty undersides of the leaves add yet one more feature of interest. Even small details like the subsequent fruits which are small and pinkish are worthy of note. When they split open they reveal orange and red seeds.

Late spring to late summer.  15-30 ft. x 15-30 ft.
