A Joy Creek Nursery Introduction for 2016. Although we do not know the parentage of this seedling, we assume that one of the parents is Clematis patens 'Tenri no Asagasumi'. The amazing size of the spring blooms of Clematis 'Bambino' first impressed us. After ten years of growing it in our garden, we have also come to admire its vigor, its free-flowering nature and its willingness to bloom for an extended time. The big, ornamental seedheads of 'Bambino' are also a sure sign of its Clematis patens heritage. The six-inch flowers have sepals that are ruffled along their edges and come to acute tips. In their interior, the red purple anthers contrast vividly with the white flesh of the sepals. When we first found this seedling, we laughingly called it 'Bambino' and that is the name that has stuck.

Late spring to early summer; late summer.  6-8 ft.
