Aucuba japonica and its many named cultivars provide some of the most versatile evergreen shrubs for difficult sites. They flourish under shady eaves and in the shadow of conifers. They are tolerant of most soils, hold up well to air pollution and are relatively cold hardy. Many are known for the brilliant gold variegation of their thick leathery leaves. 'Emily Rose' is a mid-sized, unvariegated selection. Its green leaves are large and broadly toothed along their margins. For those that do not like variegation, or simply need a calming green background shrub, this is an excellent choice. Because Aucuba 'Emily Rose' is a female selection it will only produce its scarlet fruit if a male selection is planted nearby.
