This is a "classic" manzanita released by Saratoga Horticultural Foundation in 1955 from seed collected near Sebastipol, CA, by Howard McMinn. Over the years it has proven to be one of the most reliable evergreen shrubs for West Coast gardens. With its showy dark red bark and somewhat glossy elliptical leaves, it is attractive throughout the year. It is especially welcome in early spring when clusters of bell-shaped flowers delight gardeners and pollinators for over a month.
