Abutilon megapotamicum is popularly known as Trailing abutilon, a name that reflects is growth habit. Altough it is from Brazil, it has proven winter hardy for us, even surviving single digit temperatures with little or no damage. Because it comes back from the roots each year, it rarely reaches its full height. Nonetheless, it blooms well for us. The yellow flowers open down the branches, emerging from much showier, large red calyces. The effect is almost like Christmas ornaments dangling on the tree. You can allow this to trail or tie it up like we do so that the flowering stems are fully visible to visitors.
