Native Americans cultivated these bulbous perennials in areas of vernal run-off that are magnificent when in bloom. This form grows in dry gravelly soils in the east end of the Columbia Gorge which are blessed with spring rain. 6- to 9-inch spikes of starry flowers in the spring. Will tolerate summer drought.
