The thick leaves of this groundcover persist throughout the winter. Their spiny margins are more for show than for bite. Interestingly the lobes at the stem side of the leaves are irregular - one side being rounded, the other often coming to a point - breaking their symmetry. The flowers have yellow spider-leg-like spurs.
