Dodecatheon are underused ephemerals for meadow or woodland gardens. The common name of this one describes the pointed styles which emerge out of the tip of the shooting-star flowers making it resemble, in shape only, the dreaded mosquito. This California native would not be out of place in a rock garden or the front of a herbaceous border. The plant goes summer dormant so do not worry if it should take a hiatus. The leaves are fleshy, dark green and somewhat spoon shaped.
