Virginia, North Carolina. We grow this in full sun, but we have seen this in the wild clambering in deciduous woods where it looks much more at home. This forms a small upright or trailing shrub. The bell-shaped flowers are some of the most simple yet charming of our native clematis. Their smooth sepals recurve at the tips to reveal the creamy interior of the flowers. These are seed raised and the plants are variable in flower color and size.
Midsummer to early autumn. 2 ft.
